Cosmetic Surgery of the Nose - Rhinoplasty

While you are born with the shape of your nose, or it was changed in an injury, its appearance can be altered by surgery. Known as rhinoplasty, cosmetic surgery of the nose improves facial appearance and proportions and can improve confidence by alleviating self-consciousness.

Impaired breathing can be caused by structural abnormalities, which can also be corrected by surgery.

Rhinoplasty can alter nose size, width, and profile; remove humps or depressions on the bridge; alter large, hooked or upturned nasal tip; change large, wide or upturned nostrils; and improve asymmetry or deviation.

Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgery recommends that before a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon, you be prepared to discuss your health, personal desires, and lifestyle. You should have a good idea of what you want from the surgery, your expectations and your desired outcome. You must fully disclose any medical conditions, drug allergies and previous medical treatments or surgeries, current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, and alcohol, tobacco and drug use.

Your surgeon may also do an evaluation of your current general health and assess any pre-existing health conditions for risk factors. Part of the preparation includes examination and measurement of your face, photographs for your file records, discussion of options and recommendations to reshape your nose, risks of nose surgery and potential complications, and also the anesthesia process.

The decision to have cosmetic surgery is personal and your own responsibility. You decide whether the benefits will achieve your goals and whether the risks of complications are acceptable. You will need to sign a consent form to ensure that you understand the procedures proposed and any risks or potential complications.

Cosmetic nose surgery begins with anesthesia to make you comfortable during the surgical procedure. Methods include general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The surgeon will inform you of your choices.

The incision of the nose is by a closed procedure, from inside the nose, or an open procedure, from an incision made across the tissue that separates the nostrils. Then the soft tissue that covers the nose is raised to gain access to reshape the nose’s structure.

Reshaping the nose can be a reduction or augmentation of nasal structures using cartilage grafted from another part of your body. Often, pieces of cartilage, from the partition in the middle of the nose, can be used. Sometimes ear cartilage or rib section cartilage is used. Straightening and removing projections inside the nose will improve breathing in the case of reconstructive surgery.

Once the structure of the nose is the desired shape, the peeled back skin and tissue is turned back and incisions closed. Nostril size may be altered by additional incisions.

Healing begins over the next week while the nose is supported by tubes and splints. Swelling takes a few weeks to subside and up to a year for your new profile to naturalize. While this time passes your new nose job takes on a more permanent appearance but periodic swelling may occur, especially in the morning.

Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgery suggests you consider the general dangers of surgery and anesthesia. Risks and complications include:

  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Venous blood clots
  • Numbness
  • Scarring
  • Ruptured small surface vessels
  • Asymmetry or irregularities
  • Repeat corrective surgery

Medical practice and cosmetic surgery are not an exact science. Good results are expected but there is no guarantee. Some patients may need multiple surgical procedures to reach their intended aesthetic goal.

Incisions must not be subjected to unnecessary abrasion or motion while healing. Follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully and Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgery is confident you will be satisfied with your results.
